Bio

Born in Rome in 1949, he moved to Pisa at the beginning of his university studies in 1967. He graduated in Mathematics in 1971 and, in 1972, joined the CNUCE Institute (part of the University of Pisa until 1974, and subsequently an institute of the National Research Council, CNR, from 1974). He remained at the CNR in Pisa until his retirement in 2014: first at the CNUCE Institute until 1998, then at the Institute for Telematic Applications (IAT) until 2002, and subsequently at the Institute of Informatics and Telematics. He joined CNUCE as a systems engineer, working on the management of IBM mainframes which, at the time, were used by a large number of researchers across Italy. From 1976, he contributed to the development of the RPCnet network and was responsible for its operation until it was decommissioned in 1985. Over time, he became increasingly involved in the coordination of research networks in Italy and across Europe, particularly following the introduction in Italy of the EARN/BITNET networks (1984) and the Internet (1986), as well as the establishment in 1987 of the Research Networks Harmonisation Group, from which the GARR network later emerged.
