Biografia

Alla fine degli anni ‘80 ha realizzato la prima rete Internet aperta all'utenza non accademica (IUnet) ed ha partecipato alla nascita di EUnet, la maggiore rete telematica aperta europea nei primi anni ‘90. Nel 1994 ha costituito ITnet di cui è stato a.d. fino al 2000. Nel 1995 è stato tra i promotori di AIIP e ne è stato presidente fino al 1997. Tra 1999 e 2003 avuto incarichi dirigenziali in Wind e I.NET. Dal 2006 al 2008 ha fatto parte del Comitato IGF presso il Ministero della Funzione Pubblica. Dal 2004 al 2008 e dal 2012 al 2014 è stato presidente del Comitato di Indirizzo del Registro “.IT". Dal 2014 al 2016 è stato membro della Commissione per i Diritti ed i Doveri Relativi ad Internet costituita presso la Camera dei Deputati. Dal 2000 al 2021 stato Presidente di MIX s.r.l., il principale IXP in Italia. Dal 2015 al 2023 è ritornato come professore a contratto presso l’Università di Genova. Negli ultimi 5 anni ha fatto parte della Nazionale Italiana Master di schema.

Quest’anno si celebrano i 40 anni di internet in Italia e la nascita del nome GARR con i primi incontri per la realizzazione di una rete unitaria a livello nazionale. Quanto è cambiato il mondo da quel primo ping che ha rivoluzionato tutto? Dialogo con i pionieri delle reti in Italia: dialogo tra storia dell’innovazione, cultura della rete e prospettive future della comunità scientifica e digitale.

Bio

In the late 1980s, he created the first Internet network open to non-academic users (IUnet) and participated in the creation of EUnet, the largest open European telematics network in the early 1990s. In 1994, he founded ITnet, of which he served as CEO until 2000. In 1995, he was among the promoters of AIIP and served as its president until 1997. Between 1999 and 2003, he held management positions at Wind and I.NET. From 2006 to 2008, he served on the IGF Committee at the Ministry of Public Administration. From 2004 to 2008 and from 2012 to 2014, he served as president of the Steering Committee of the ".IT" Registry. From 2014 to 2016, he was a member of the Commission for Rights and Duties Relating to the Internet established at the Chamber of Deputies. From 2000 to 2021, he was President of MIX s.r.l., the leading IXP in Italy. From 2015 to 2023, he returned to the University of Genoa as a contract professor. For the past five years, he has been a member of the Italian National Masters Team.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the internet in Italy and the emergence of the name GARR, with the first meetings aimed at creating a unified national network. How much has the world changed since that first ping that revolutionised everything? A dialogue with the pioneers of networking in Italy, bringing together the history of innovation, network culture and future perspectives of the scientific and digital community.
