Quest’anno si celebrano i 40 anni di internet in Italia e la nascita del nome GARR con i primi incontri per la realizzazione di una rete unitaria a livello nazionale. Quanto è cambiato il mondo da quel primo ping che ha rivoluzionato tutto? Dialogo con i pionieri delle reti in Italia: dialogo tra storia dell’innovazione, cultura della rete e prospettive future della comunità scientifica e digitale.

Bio
Enzo Valente holds a degree in Physics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and is a Research Director at the INFN. He was Director of the GARR-B Project and the first Director of the GARR Consortium (2003–2014), leading the development of the Italian Research Network and actively participating in European and international networks. He is a member of the GARR Technical-Scientific Committee and the Italian representative in the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG). Extended version A graduate in Physics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza," he taught Instrumental Methods of Subnuclear Physics at the same university and served as a Research Director at the INFN, with over 450 international scientific publications. From 1985 to 1991, he chaired the INFN Computing Commission, from 1990 to 1993 he directed the NIC-Rome Project (later the CASPUR Consortium), and from 1992 to 1998 the INFN-CNAF supercomputing center in Bologna. A key figure in the harmonization of research networks in Italy since the second half of the 1980s, he led GARR, first as Director of the GARR-B Project and then as the first Director of the GARR Consortium (2003–2014), providing the Italian scientific community with a reliable and cutting-edge network. He actively participated in European and international networks, contributing to projects in Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Far East. Since 2013, he has been the Italian representative in the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) and since 2015, a member of the GARR Technical-Scientific Committee.
Abstract
Panel: The roots of the future
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the internet in Italy and the emergence of the name GARR, with the first meetings aimed at creating a unified national network. How much has the world changed since that first ping that revolutionised everything? A dialogue with the pioneers of networking in Italy, bringing together the history of innovation, network culture and future perspectives of the scientific and digital community.
